When should I consult a gynecologist?

There is no age at which you should start seeing a gynecologist. It is imperative to come for a checkup as soon as you are sexually active. Or earlier if you have any complaints or questions regarding puberty, periods or sexual health.

 

What is a pap smear? Pap smear is a screening test for cervical cancer. IT is not painful and only takes a few minutes.

When should I have my first pap smear? It is recommended to start screening at 21 years old. However if you are sexually active before that age you should still consult a gynecologist for a regular exam.

 

What is the Human Papilloma virus?

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted virus that causes 90% of all cervical cancer.

What is HPV Vaccine? It is the vaccine against some of the HPV type causing cervical cancer (16,18) and condylomas (6, 11). It should be given preferably to girls age 11-12 (before sexual activity) all the way to 26 years old.

 

OBSTETRICS

Is it possible to keep exercising while you are pregnant?

It is advised to all pregnant patients to stay active as long as they can. Running, pilates, yoga, walking or swimming are recommended physical activities during pregnancy. However if the patient has a complicated pregnancy she should contact her doctor before engaging in any physical activity.

 

Is it safe to travel during pregnancy?

It is generally safe to fly while you are pregnant but drink plenty of water top stay hydrated and don’t sit for a long time. Walk around to avoid blood clots in your legs.

INFERTILITY

What is egg freezing?

Egg freezing (human oocytes cryopreservation) is a technique in which a women’s eggs are extracted, frozen and stored. When she is ready to conceive, eggs are thawed, fertilized and transferred to the uterus as embryos.

Egg freezing can be done from puberty until 40 years old but it is best to do it between the ages of 20 to 35 years old.

 

Who can benefit from this technique?

  1. Women diagnosed with cancer who are at risk of losing their fertility due to chemo or radiotherapy
  2. Women who would like to delay pregnancy and preserve their future ability to have children either because they do not have a partner yet or for other personal reasons (carrier…)

 

I have been trying to conceive for 6 months and I am not pregnant yet, Should I be worried?

There is no reason to be worried about infertility before at least one year of properly timed unprotected intercourse. Most patients take 6-9 months to get pregnant with their first child. However if you or your partner have a medical condition, you might want to see a gynecologist to make this this does not affect your fertility
